Well I’m bald and here are the pictures to prove it!

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared and donated to Balding for Dollars. Your donations will help reduce the financial stress on families who have a child with cancer and by spreading the word you are raising the public’s awareness of childhood cancer.

She said, “The financial burden on top of that emotional rollercoaster is what can split families apart. The money is the simple thing to help with.”

She asked me to imagine what I would feel like if my very best friend in the world was diagnosed with cancer. I thought about how scared I would feel, how I would want to keep my spirits up for her, how I would want to support her through her own feelings of loneliness and fear. I thought about how devastating it would be to hear that the cancer was not curable. 

Then she asked me to imagine that I had to pay for my friend’s food, rent, and bills on top of all that. I think I would feel so torn because I would want to spend as much time as possible at my friend’s side but I would also know that I had to try to keep the finances together because I would still have to think about the future. I imagine the logistical stress on top of the emotional stress might feel unbearable.

I can’t imagine doing all that alone and without help and my aunt agrees. She said she is grateful the social workers at Children’s Hospital and all her friends and family who banded together to raise funds to help cover the costs of supplies and medications for Nathan. 

You can help someone who may be in a similar position to my aunt and uncle by donating to Balding for Dollars. 

We’re only three days away and only about $700 away from the $4000 goal. Please help spread the word so we can reach our goal by Saturday!

People have been asking about the main event and whether people can come watch and the answer is YES!!! Please do!!!

Come join me on Saturday, May 9th from 11am-4pm in the Child and Family Research Institute Lobby at BC Children’s Hospital to enjoy the festivities of the Balding for Dollars Main Event and watch me get my head shaved! 

My cousin Kyle, who is Nathan’s brother, is also going to have his head shaved! Actually, I’m going to shave his head and he’s going to shave mine!

So come out on May 9th and support families and kids with cancer in BC. We’ll help show kids with cancer that we think bald is beautiful!

I’m going to be bald in 9 days…since that realization I’ve been paying more attention to my hair. Letting it blow in the wind while driving over the Burrard St. Bridge. Putting it up…then putting it down…then up again…no down. Maybe a few more subtle hair tosses while walking in the sunshine. A twirl or two while waiting in line for coffee. A couple of Mac photobooth photos, I’m not going to lie. I might have even had a 15 minute shower last night where I may or may not have lathered, rinsed and repeated more than once. 

I feel it’s justified…I’ve had my hair long since I was in kindergarten! I vividly remember the day on the playground that I decided to grow out my mullet (by the way, thanks for that Mum) and there’s been no turning back since then.

Until now! I’m incredibly excited to shave my head May 9th at BC Children’s Hospital to help kids with cancer! Thank you so much to all of you who have been sharing this link, leaving great messages, and donating to Balding for Dollars. You should come out on the day  to show that you believe bald is beautiful and witness the unveiling of my pale scalp at the main event, May 9th at BC Children’s Hospital!

One of the things I remember most about volunteering at BC Children’s Hospital was that even though the kids were sick, they were still joking and playing around. Anything that was fun and helped pass the time, whether it be movie nights, new video games, or day trips out of the hospital, was a big help to the kids and families.

Dan Mornar tells us a story of how Balding for Dollars was able to help a young boy and his family create a happy memory in a very stressful time. By spreading the word or donating to Balding for Dollars, you can help make a memory that will last a lifetime for sick kids and their families.

When you donate to BC Children’s Hospital’s Balding for Dollars campaign, your donation goes towards research and towards helping families who are supporting a child through cancer.

The donations are split up approximately like this:

40% to financially supporting families who have a child with cancer; Balding for Dollars will help out with supplies, medication costs, and transportation costs (especially for families who live outside the Lower Mainland)

20% to pediatric oncology research at BC Children’s Hospital

20% to education bursaries and scholarships for childhood cancer survivors and their siblings

14% to running teen adventure camps for childhood cancer survivors and their siblings (they’ve done dogsledding, surfing, and white water rafting camps to name a few)

6% to running the Balding for Dollars campaign
